The papers contain Key's contract to teach mathematics at the University of Virginia, signed by Francis Walker Gilmer, a copy of University regulations in the hand of Thomas Jefferson, and extracts from the University of Virginia Rector and Visitor's minutes about Key's resignation. There are also seven letters to Key: from Gilmer on Key's dissatisfaction with Virginia, from Henry Lee regretting his departure and requesting his views on academic discipline and instruction, from Robert Mercer Taliaferro Hunter reporting University of Virginia news including the resignation of Professor Long, and comparing U.S. and British education. In addition are letters from Robert Edward Lee thanking him for a gift of books to Washington College and from George Long and Temple Chevallier recommending him. With these are photos of an oil portrait of Key, and of the family of Richard Ironmonger Troward, by Richard Cosway.
